Sanford's Historic Districts
Sanford has two historic districts listed on the National Register of Historic Places. A third, local historic district was added in 2020.The Commercial Historic District was listed on the National Register in 1976 and has 26 contributing buildings, dating from 1877-1924. The Old Sanford Residential Historic District was listed on the National Register in 1989 and contains 434 buildings in a wide range of historic architectural styles including Craftsman, Prairie, Queen Anne, Folk Victorian, National, Colonial Revival, Spanish Eclectic, and Mission.Â
Certificate of Appropriateness
Any exterior work, including repairs, new construction or site work on a Historic Landmark or on a structure or property located in the Downtown Commercial Historic District or the Residential Historic District must receive a Certificate of Appropriateness (COA) before the work begins.
All development plan and permit related applications are required to be submitted using the Citizenserve Portal. The portal allows for online submission of applications as well as payment of required fees.Â
Historic Preservation Board
The Historic Preservation Board oversees Sanford’s historic commercial district, which was established in 1985, and the residential historic district, which was established in 1993. The board promotes the educational, cultural, and economic welfare of the City by preserving and protecting visible reminders of the history and cultural heritage of the city, state and country as well as by encouraging new developments that will be harmonious with the existing historic area. The Board meets on the 3rd Wednesday of each month at 5:30 PM.
